Waterproof jacket with hood, waterproof leggings, hat, gloves, suitable footwear, map (O.S. Outdoor Leisure 1 (Dark Peak Area)), compass, and emergency food.
Start at crow edge community centre (GR SE 179 052)
- Turn right down road to Victoria Pub crossroads (GR SE 1780 0543). Turn right at pub.
- At first sharp bend turn right on Lower Maythorne Lane (GR SE 1808 0571). Continue along road to junction with Browns Edge Road (GR SE 1900 0548).
- Take track on right passing farm buildings on right. Look for gate on left (GR SE 1887 0528). Through gate to follow wall line. Beware of wet ground. Path sometimes leaves wall for dryer ground. Follow path to track (GR SE 1896 0453). Take track to main road A616.
CAUTION – VERY BUSY ROAD. CROSS WITH CARE.
- Turn left looking for playground across road on right (GR SE 1886 0426). Cross road to take path to go past playground. Look for step through stile on right. Go through and follow fence line. At GR SE 1830 0386 the fence goes sharp left, carry straight on to meet road (B6106) (GR SE 1829 0382)
- Turn right for 500 metres to junction with Brook Hill Lane (GR SE 1786 0375). Turn left to Carlecotes. Go through Carlecotes looking for building on left with Church sign and nearby footpath sign (GR SE 1778 0330)
- Take left hand footpath sign passing farm buildings on right. At corner of farm building look for church gate straight ahead. Go through and follow path passing side of hidden church. Keep on path to meet track (GR SE 1793 0326). Turn left down track following yellow arrows. Go over stile or through gate (GR SE 1807 0328). At wall corner look for yellow arrow (GR SE 1809 0326). Leave track left, heading for gate with stile on right (GR SE 1823 0319). Over stile following white arrow to another stile (GR SE 1835 0313). Over stile to head diagonally left. Go over brow in field passing low brick structure 20 yards to the left. Look to bottom of field and locate gate (GR SE 1862 0300). This is Soughley.
- Go through gate, forward over bridge crossing small stream. Turn sharp right, look to large barn locating yellow arrow on right corner. Follow arrow down side of barn. Over stile and follow wall. At end of wall look for small footbridge on right (GR SE 1863 0285). Over this bridge and look to next footbridge. Bear left after second bridge follow yellow arrows uphill towards Trans Pennine Trail.
- Cross bridge over Trans Pennine Trail. Follow path to left, turn right through gate into field (GR SE189 027). Keep to left hand side of field until reaching the cottages.
- Pass cottages (GR SE192 015) turn right and follow bridleway towards main road. Alongside of main road for 50m then cross to blue gate.
CAUTION – VERY BUSY ROAD. CROSS WITH CARE.
10. Across road and take bridleway into woods, past mobile phone mast on right.
11. Follow track straight on until bottom of short downhill when path carries straight towards fields behind trees.
12. Path curves round then through gate. Straight across field (bearing 150
o) to stile at left hand side of gate.
13. Turn left, then follow track round to the right along to old barn.
14. Turn left through gate (east), follow path straight down through wood. Cross stream over wooden bridge and up to checkpoint.
CHECKPOINT A (GR SE 197 006) 9.1 KM (Opens 08.30)
15. Turn right (south) and follow track through woods down to stone bridge (GR SE 197006).
16. Pass over bridge and go through gate, then turn left on rocky path winding up to onto open moor and across Hingcliff common (bearing of 195
0), pass first path from left. Path dips down then back up to reach a junction with a second path from left.
17. Keep right, continuing uphill following the path along Mickledon Edge (bearing of 160
0) and Cut Gate. Path gradually swings round to bearing 210
0 uphill to stone cairn on brow of hill.
CHECKPOINT B (GR SK 185 960) DISTANCE: 19.71 KM (Opens 08.55)
This section can be very boggy, you will need to traverse around some of the boggy areas, but ensure you always return to the path which does exist the whole way across this moor.
18. Turn right taking path at bearing of 310
0 and progress across Featherbed Moss to trig point at Outer Edge (541M, GR SK177969).
19. Follow path along watershed crossing Harden Moss swinging gradually round from a bearing of 340
0 to 275
0 until you reach small stone cairn at Loftshaw Clough Head (GR SK 144 986)
CHECKPOINT C (GR SK 144 986) DISTANCE: 19.71 KM (Opens 09.50)
20. Turn right taking path due North. After 1.25k, reach remains of Lady Cross, on brow of hill (GR SK 148 998).
21. Turn right on green track (bearing 65
0) to reach gate and stile and busy main road (Lasche).
CHECKPOINT D FOOD & DRINK (GR SE 155 000) DISTANCE: 21.71 KM (Opens 10.00)
CAUTION – VERY BUSY ROAD. CROSS WITH CARE.
22. Go straight across the road, through gate follow path bearing 328° going gradually downhill.
23. Cross stream (GR SE152007), continue on footpath following posts marked ‘B’ (Barnsley boundary walk). Go through wooden gate marked ‘B’ in corner of field up to left.
24. Follow path downhill. Cross stream (GR SE149008) continue on path. Cross another stream (GR SE 148 009) and uphill to the road.
25. Go through gate (GR SE 148 015), turn right down road.
Beware of traffic on road
26. Go down road to car park entrance 500 metres on left.
27. Follow entrance towards sailing club. Right across dam wall just before sailing club entrance.
28. Left at end of dam wall and alongside reservoir with water to your left.
29. On to road 500 metres, checkpoint on left across from houses.
CHECKPOINT E (GR SE 151 038) DISTANCE: 26.3 KM (Opens 10.30)
30. Follow path through old quarry area to road (GR SE 143042), left and across road, then right into woods (gate)
31. Down through woodland path to “Church” artwork (GR SE 138048), turn right (bearing 22
O).
32. At small reservoir, right and up track 200 metres, then right up steep slope, over style and follow path up through field to road.
33. Right up road into Hade Edge.
34. Straight on at cross road in village down to main road opposite sailing club.
35. Right up Snittle road
(unmade road, not main road) 500 metres
CHECKPOINT F (GR SE 149 050) DISTANCE: 30.6 KM (Opens 10.40)
36. Then left on path across fields to road.
Beware of traffic on road
37. Across main road and follow path across fields (Ing Royd) then left to lane.
38. Turn right and follow lane round to junction of 3 roads and a track (GR SE159058). Go straight on up Ox Lee Lane (track) to top.
39. Cross road and follow flags to finish at Community Centre
