This is everything our three vehicles carry to an incident, and what is inside the main bags and kits. It is a snapshot from our kit records: items are checked, replaced and moved between vehicles throughout the year. For the vehicles themselves, see Vehicles and equipment.
Every item here was paid for by donations, grants and sponsors. See what we need next.
M1 and M2: Land Rover Defender and Discovery

What’s in each bag
Section kit
A rucksack carried onto the hill by a search party, so the party can shelter and look after a casualty until more help arrives. Each one holds a bothy bag (group shelter) and a 15 m throwline for rescues near water.
Trauma kit
Our casualty carers’ kit for serious injuries: controlling bleeding, supporting broken bones and keeping the casualty stable and warm until they reach hospital. It is used alongside the vacuum splints and vacuum mattress.
ABC bag
Kit for the first checks on any casualty: Airway, Breathing and Circulation. It lets the first team members on scene keep someone breathing and check their condition while the rest of the team arrives.
Vacuum splint set
- Leg splint
- Elbow splint
- Forearm splint
- Pump
- Carry bag
- Spare adapter
The splints mould around an injured limb, then the pump removes the air so they set firm.
Crag kit
Rope hardware for lowering or raising a casualty or a team member on steep ground, including a Rescucender rope grab and prusik loops. Each Land Rover has its own colour-coded kit: red on M1 and blue on M2.
Stretcher lifting kit
Straps and slings so the team can lift and carry the stretcher, or rig it for a rope lower.
Stretcher wheel
The large wheel on the roof of M1 is not a spare: it clips under the stretcher so the team can roll a casualty along tracks and paths instead of carrying the full weight.
Vacuum mattress
A full-length mattress that sets firm around a casualty with a suspected back or neck injury, so they can be carried over rough ground without moving.
Casualty bag
An insulated, waterproof bag that zips around the casualty on the stretcher to keep them warm and dry on the way out.
Bothy bag
A lightweight group shelter. Everyone sits inside with their backs to the fabric and it quickly warms up: a lifesaver for a cold, injured casualty waiting on the moor.
Spare battery box
Five spare battery packs for the search torches, each holding four rechargeable 18650 cells.
Smoke flare box
Two large smoke canisters and one handheld smoke flare, used to show a helicopter crew the wind direction and where to land.
