Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team gets no government funding for its running costs. Every vehicle, radio, stretcher and training course is paid for by local businesses, grant-makers, community groups and people who live, walk and ride in our area. This page is our thank you to them.
Our sponsors
These local businesses and organisations keep the team on the road, week in, week out.
Fuel
Penney’s garage, Penistone
Cecil Penney’s, our local garage on Sheffield Road in Penistone, supplies fuel for our vehicles. Every call-out starts with a drive to the roadhead, often up long moorland tracks, so fuel is one of our biggest running costs.
Vehicles
Elite Land Rover Specialists
Our local Land Rover specialists in Deepcar, who help keep our Land Rovers ready whenever we are called out. They spend their lives on rough moorland tracks, so keeping them reliable matters.
Kit cleaning
Love Laundry, Shepley
Love Laundry in Shepley cleans our casualty bags and other kit free of charge, so it is clean, dry and ready for the next casualty.
Recent support
Some of the people and places who have helped us over the last two years:
- September 2026: The Nags Head, Loxley hosted a fundraising evening for the team.
- August 2026: Tesco, Penistone welcomed our volunteers for a full day’s collection, one of several supermarket collections through the year.
- June 2026: Worsbrough car boot sale. Our supporters ran a stall, and everyone who bought something helped.
- Ongoing: Penney’s garage in Penistone, Elite Land Rover Specialists in Deepcar and Love Laundry in Shepley, our local sponsors (see above).
- September 2024: Scafell Pike. A group of friends and family climbed England’s highest mountain to raise money for us.
Thank you, every one of you
To everyone who has dropped money in one of our collection tins, or, more recently, tapped a card or phone on our contactless reader: thank you. Every coin and every tap adds up.
And to everyone who has walked, run, ridden or climbed for us and asked friends and family to sponsor them: you turn your own effort into kit, fuel and training for the team. Thank you.
Grants and larger gifts
Grants and larger gifts pay for the things that take years to save for.
- South Yorkshire Police: donated our Volkswagen Caravelle incident control vehicle, M3.
- The Cadbury Foundation: a grant in December 2022, through Mondelēz International’s “Your Charity Your Choice” scheme, for 17 specialist coats for team members, plus training and equipment. (Read about it)
- Constancy Lodge, Huddersfield (Freemasons): a gift towards refurbishing our base.
- Wates Giving: a grant in 2016 for water rescue equipment and protective kit, so more of our team could help in floods. (Read about it)
- Rotary Club of Stainborough: a donation in 2018 to help keep people safe on the hills and in bad weather.
- Simpson Associates: new team T-shirts for every member in 2020, when the pandemic stopped our usual fundraising.
Clubs and community groups
Clubs and community groups have raised money for us over the years, including:
- Penistone Round Table: the Skinflint Rally and other events in 2021.
- Penistone Footpath Runners: money raised through the club’s races.
- Valley MTB: the Christmas Jumper Ride.
- Everyone who gave to our 2021 vehicle appeal, which helped replace a retired Land Rover. J G Pears was the appeal’s Gold Sponsor, and Simpson Associates also contributed.
Our support goes back a long way. In 1965, our first stretcher was paid for with a grant from Stocksbridge Urban District Council. Read more in our history.
